Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

First up I am delighted to announce my oil painting ‘Flowing from Land to Sea,’ (90x120cm) was selected and hung for this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

The theme this year, curated by David Remfry, was ‘Only Connect’ taken from E.M. Forster’s Howard’s End.  I am delighted to say I have a big red dot next to my painting as well, so my painting will be off to wonderful new home at the end of the Exhibition.

Flowing From Land to Sea, Oil on cradle wood board, 90cm x 120cm

I am so thrilled to have been selected this year. I keep going to visit it on the walls of the Royal Academy.  Varnishing Day and the Artists’ Service at the Church of St James on Piccadilly was pretty special too. The day was a fabulous celebration, starting with a steel band leading us through the Royal Academy courtyard and down Piccadilly.

Afterwards, the fizz was flowing and lots of arty chats were had.  The Summer Exhbition runs until 8th August at RA, so you still have time to see all the great works on show!

Location: Main Galleries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BD
Dates: 13th June - 20th August 2023
Details: Tues–Sun: 10am–6pm | Fri: 10am–9pm | Tickets £22–24.50 (including donation)

Chelsea Art Society, Summer Exhibition

The Chelsea Society Summer Exhibition took place at Chelsea Town Hall in mid-June. As ever, their annual show was a huge success, celebrating a wide range of art mediums and the sheer volume of work it always displays.  As a Council Member of the society I was very proud of the show. The Council works extremely hard to make it a success.

St. Paul’s At Twilight, Oil 30 x 40cm

If you didn’t make the show this year, do make sure that you go next year. It is always such a treat with varied work by amazing artists.

The Thames at Dusk, Oil 30 x 40cm

I’m delighted to say that I sold two London cityscapes. Most of you follow me on Instagram and have seen that my urban landscapes have been growing over the last couple of years. I really enjoy them as something different from a classic landscape or seascape. They challenge me in a different way and are proving incredibly popular with buyers.

The exhibition is still available online.

Location: Chelsea Old Town Hall, Kings Road, London SW3 5EE
Dates: 14th - 19th June 2023
Details: 10am - 6pm each day closing at 2pm on last day

The Society of Women Artists, 162nd Annual Exhibition

The Society of Women Artists also had their Annual Show at the Mall Galleries on The Mall.  It is always so vibrant and contemporary and I am proud to be a Full Member now. I was thrilled with my four watercolours which looked super together on the wall in the main gallery.

I also contributed to the Society of Women Artists playing cards. Members were invited to create a painting for each one of the cards.  My card is the Ace of Hearts (well, of course, it would be!).

You can still buy a pack online through the Society’s website.

Location: Mall Galleries  London SW1
Dates: 6th – 10th June 2023

The Royal Watercolour Society Gallery, inaugural show, ‘NOW’

The Royal Watercolour Society had their wonderful show ‘NOW’, in their new RWS Gallery in Whitcomb Street, near the National Gallery and off Trafalgar Square. Some of you may remember I had my solo show “Contstables Walks” there last year.

“Now” included RWS members and guests such as three current Royal Academicians, David Remfry, Diana Armfield and Barbara Rae.

The show has finished now although still accessible online. It was a great way to mark the return of the RWS to its gallery on Whitcomb Street.  I was delighted as a Member to have shown alongside such esteemed artists.

Happily I sold some large pieces.  This show is now available by appointment only and also can be seen online.

It is a beautiful gallery just outside Petworth set in beautiful countryside. It offers both a packed barn of wonderful artworks and ceramics, as well as a great sculpture garden making any visit truly memorable.  Do pop it on your list of days out in the future.

The Royal Watercolour Society Gallery, inaugural show, ‘NOW’

The first official Royal Watercolour Society exhibition (since the almost year-long soft launch) will commemorate the RWS’s return to the gallery that they were based at around 200 years ago.

We now have the inaugural show at the gallery at Whitcomb Street called ‘NOW’. The show will feature original artworks in water-based media by almost every present-day Member, Associate, Guest and Honorary Member of the RWS.

Soft Light, Watercolour, 60 x 80cm

As an Associate Member I will have one painting in this extraordinary display of work which will include pieces by artists such as Barbara Rae, David Remfry, and Diana Armfield to name just a few. How exciting to be a part of history and hang alongside them.

RWS ‘NOW’ will mark a very special, historic occasion as they begin their 250 year lease. Situated just off Trafalgar Square, the gallery will serve as a space to complement the RWS’s existing home at Bankside Gallery and will host exhibitions and events to promote and celebrate the enjoyment of water based media and all art.

Dates: 7th – 21st June

Details: Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 5pm and online

As a Member, I will have four paintings in the Chelsea Society Summer Exhibition. As part of the Society’s Council, I can honestly say how hard the society works to make the show a success. Every year, the Annual Exhibition is a delight to see, and this year is going to be better than ever.

Piers Feetham Gallery, Aldeburgh Festival

I am delighted to be showing again with the wonderful Piers Feetham Gallery, this time in Aldeburgh. I have a long association with the Gallery and you may have seen his stand at the Connect Art Fair at the Mall Galleries earlier in the year at which some of my work was shown.

Coastal Light, Oil, 85 x 85cm

Looking West, Oil, 50 x 50cm

The show will be opening in Aldeburgh and run over the Summer. I was invited by the gallery to paint a large oil work which will now be the image on all of their invites, so that’s a special honour.

In addition to my larger work, I will have a variety of paintings in show at the gallery.

Dates: 10th-23rd June

Please keep an eye out on the Piers Feetham Gallery website for details and my social media.

The Society of Women Artists, 162nd Annual Exhibition

This year I am so very thrilled to say that I have four paintings in the show and will be taking oart as a full Member of the Society! Woot woot!

I have taken part in the show over many years, submitting my work into the Open Exhibition and having been lucky enough to have had my work selected year on year. To be part of this society and recognised as a full Member means a huge amount to me.

Blue Horizon, Watercolour, 20 x 25cm

As well as having four paintings hanging in the show I have also contributed to the Society’s new fun Playing Cards project. Members were asked to submit a painting suitable for use as a playing card. A full pack has been created, so it represents a variety of amazing works by so many members of the Society.

You can buy a pack of cards at the Exhibition or you can buy a pack online. I am the Ace of Hearts, so look out for that card! They will make wonderful stocking fillers for later in the year – but why wait? - or fun little presents for someone right now.

Chartreuse Fields, Oil, 90 x 120cm

In the show, I have plein air oil paintings, all painted outside, as well as a selection of much larger oil works up to 90cm x 120cm, which would look great on a mantelpiece.

The show features lots of amazing artists and as well as a beautiful sculpture garden to walk around as well. It is definitely a destination gallery and worth a visit!

Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition

I am delighted I have had a painting selected again this year for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual show! I’m so thrilled! Such happy news! Such an honour to be selected and show alongside such great artists in this prestigious Annual Show. The exhibition runs from 25th November to 10th December at the Mall Galleries in London.

Chelsea Art Society - William Sloane Medal Winner

I am delighted to announce that this week, I won this year’s William Sloane Medal at the Chelsea Art Society Members’ Show.

It was judged by the eminent Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Art Critic at The Times for the past 20 years. I feel so honoured that she selected my work, especially as the standard of the work within the Chelsea Art Society is exceptionally high.

Rachel said of my work “While following in the Great British Landscape tradition of painters like Constable and Turner, Lucy has a fresh modern take. I was taken by the way that the painting resolved and unresolved itself, as you walk towards and away from it!”

Rachel was referring to the way that you see brushstrokes when you look closely, however as you move away, it falls together into a whole picture. She particularly commented on the ‘movement’ and ‘gestural brush marks’ in my work. This is so flattering as I have been painting seriously for nearly twenty years and a fresh take on the Great British landscape tradition is what my work is all about!

I feel honoured to be in such good company! This is the fifth year the William Sloane Medal has been awarded and has previously been won by some fabulous artists.

A BIG thank you to Sloane Stanley Chelsea, Damian Greenish, and the wonderful new president of The Chelsea Art Society, Alice Hall for being so supportive when presenting me with the medal itself. And, of course, thanks to Rachel for selecting me as the winner!

As a Finalist, my painting will be hung at The British Art Prize 2022 exhibition at the Gallery at the OXO Tower from 23rd-27th November. One for your diary if you are in the area!

Constable's Walks

Solo show, Royal Watercolour Society Galleries, London

A BIG thank you to everyone who came to see Constable’s Walks at the new Royal Watercolour Society Galleries in London.  It was an absolute joy to meet so many of you face to face after many years of knowing you virtually through social media.

I am pleased to say that the show was a huge success. Over 400 people came to visit the show. So that’s amazing!

The show has now moved online and can be seen here. A lot of the work has now sold, however, there are some wonderful paintings left to buy, so go and take a look. The Catalogue that accompanied the show flew out the door! There are just a few Exhibition Catalogues left, so grab one online while you can.

Thank you again for all your wonderful support both in the gallery, on social media in your comments and private messages. There were some very kind words in the Visitors Book that I shall treasure.
